1949: American tennis player Gussie Moran caused a stir at Wimbledon when she appeared wearing lacetrimme­d knickers designed by Teddy Tinling. The All England Club was so outraged that Tinling was not a welcome visitor for 33 years.

1960: Floyd Patterson knocked out Sweden’s Ingemar Johansson in the fifth round at the New York Polo Grounds to become the first man to regain boxing’s world heavyweigh­t title. Patterson had lost his crown to the Swede a year earlier.

1987: New Zealand beat France 29-9 in Auckland to become the first winners of the Rugby World Cup.
