1949: American tennis player Gussie Moran caused a stir at Wimbledon when she appeared wearing lacetrimmed knickers designed by Teddy Tinling. The All England Club was so outraged that Tinling was not a welcome visitor for 33 years.
1960: Floyd Patterson knocked out Sweden’s Ingemar Johansson in the fifth round at the New York Polo Grounds to become the first man to regain boxing’s world heavyweight title. Patterson had lost his crown to the Swede a year earlier.
1987: New Zealand beat France 29-9 in Auckland to become the first winners of the Rugby World Cup.
