Film of flat where fatal fire started

-

BODYCAM footage from the first firefighters to enter the flat where the Grenfell Tower fire began has been shown to an inquiry into the disaster.

The crew are heard coughing as they break into flat 16 on the fourth floor at 1.07am.

Temperature gauges on the pair’s cameras show highs of 260C, hovering at 85C.

In the four-minute clip, the firefighters are seen opening the kitchen door, where the fire is raging.

They try to put out the blaze several times, before entering the room and fully extinguishing the flames by 1.20am.

The flames had already swept out of the window, and a firefighter is seen looking out at cladding falling down the building.

The owner of the flat, Behailu Kebede, was the first to call emergency services, at 12.54am, on June 14 last year. The disaster killed 72 people.

Prof Niamh Nic Daeid, who showed the footage, said evidence suggested the fire started in or around Mr Kebede’s fridge-freezer.
