Checkpoint shooting prosecutio­n

A FORMER soldier is being prosecuted over the fatal shooting of a Catholic man at an Army checkpoint in Northern Ireland in 1988.

Aidan McAnespie, 23, was hit by a machine gun bullet on his way to a Gaelic football match. The soldier said he accidental­ly fired three shots because his fingers were wet.

After the shooting at Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone, SHOT Aidan McAnespie he was fined for negligent discharge of his gun and medically discharged from the Army. Yesterday prosecutor­s told ex Grenadier Guardsman David Jonathan Holden, 48, they intended to prosecute him for gross negligence manslaught­er. A Public Prosecutio­n Service spokesman said the decision followed “careful considerat­ion of all the evidence.” Mr McAnespie’s family claimed Aidan had been harassed by the Army.
