Fans so eager to Kane it with £183m splurge

-

ENGLAND fans are set for a £183million spending spree in just six days as they go World Cup barmy.

Skipper Harry Kane’s last-gasp goal to clinch three points against Tunisia has sent the nation Three Lions loopy.

Figures from the Centre for Retail Research reveal that by Sunday, when England play Panama, pubs and clubs will have raked in £75million from the feelgood factor. Between England winning 2-1 on Monday and the 1pm kick-off on Sunday,

fans will have splashed out a further £50million on food.

And the splurge will see £35million blown on England shirts and sportswear while the sale of souvenirs such as flags, mugs and cuddly toys will boost the high street by £23million.

The CRR research for website VoucherCodes found England fans are in the mood for a massive party on Sunday, even though the team has just started its World Cup campaign. CRR director Prof Joshua Bamfield said: “After a low-key feel about the England team, expectations are now running high, with fans believing England will make the last 16.

“Retailers are in for a much-needed boost as millions get behind the team, with food and drink playing a large part in the party atmosphere.”

According to the study, football fans will go on a £1.33billion spending bender if England make it through the second round, rising to £2.72billion if Kane leads the team into the final. Londoners are the most likely to buy a new team shirt for England games, Sheffield residents are the most likely to head to the pub to watch fixtures while those in Norwich will host World Cup parties at home to cheer on the team.

Jimmy New, director of marketing at VoucherCodes, said: “The 2018 World Cup looks set to be a big one for British retailers, with £1.33billion estimated to be put through the tills.”
