Mario Tennis Aces

-

£44.99 / Nintendo Switch ★★★★ Mario’s latest sports outing harks back to earlier tennis-based adventures on the Game Boy platforms, and it’s got the same colourful, cartoony look that hides a richly detailed and complex arcade game.

Although it’s based around a story mode that gives it an almost RPG-like feel, Mario Tennis Aces is at its best when you split the Joy-Cons with a mate and engage in a multiplayer match.

Hitting the right buttons will set you up for a topspin, lob or drop-shot, but there are a range of special moves to learn as well. For example, when a star appears on the court, you can perform a “Zone Shot”, which switches to first-person mode, slows time and lets you fire cross-court into the corner beyond your opponent.

This is easily the best multiplayer tennis game since Wii Sports.
