Ex-Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe and his wife Marion outside the Old Bailey after he was cleared of incitement to murder. Thorpe, then 50, and three others were charged with conspiracy to murder Norman Scott, the politician’s former secret lover in the early Sixties . Although all were acquitted, the scandal damaged Thorpe’s reputation, forcing him to retire from active politics. He died in 2014.
