11 genes key to blocking Big C spread

CANCER could be stopped in its tracks “within the next few years” say scientists who have discovered genes which fuel its spread.

Researchers found that if they blocked the 11 genes, diseased cells could not break off and start secondary tumours around the body – known as metastasis.

Dr John Lewis, of the University of Alberta, Canada, said: “Metastasis kills 90 per cent of all patients with cancer.

“The potential significance is incredible.”

The ground- breaking research paves the way for a new effective way to treat all forms of cancer. The team is now hoping to progress to human trials over the next few years.
