Our 1951 photo shows British troops returning from the Korean War lining the rails of a ship waiting to berth at Liverpool docks. The men with the feathers and tassels are members of the Northumberland Fusiliers. The Korean War began on the same day a year earlier when communist North Korea invaded the South. A UN force, led by the US, came to the aid of the South, while China and Russia supported the North. The war ended with an armistice in 1953, but a peace treaty between the two nations has never been signed.
