1 They contain a lot of vitamins – namely vitamins A, B, C, E and K, plus calcium, magnesium and fibre. 2 They contain potassium – 100g of tomatoes would contain around 6% of an adult’s RDA. 3 Tomatoes contain carotenoid­s, which may protect against age-related macular degenerati­on and other eye diseases. 4 They may help to slow the growth of stomach cancers, and cooked tomatoes are thought to help prevent certain cancers, including prostate cancer. 5 This effect of tomatoes is more potent if they’re cooked.
