Maybe, just maybe we’ll dare to dream

CONGRATULATIONS to England on their stunning 6-1 win against Panama on Sunday. The lads are having a great start to the tournament and, with a bit of luck, I can see them getting to the semis and even going all the way.

They all played well, but Harry Kane’s hat-trick proves he is up there with the England greats such as Geoff Hurst and Gary Lineker and it would be glorious to see him win the Golden Boot.

Yes, Panama were an easy side to beat, but I think if we stay focused and don’t get carried away with ourselves, for the first time in years we’re in with a fair chance of winning the World Cup. Come on, England.

Johnny McElroy, Ilford, Gtr London

I think England have a great chance in this year’s World Cup finals, but I’ve spotted a couple of things that potentially could wreck their hopes. Firstly, will they please stop passing the ball across their own penalty box. They just about keep getting away with it, but stronger teams will punish them. Secondly, stop jumping all over the goalscorer. I am really surprised that Harry Kane has not been seriously hurt yet. So, follow these two simple things, lads, and go on and win the World Cup.

Alan Bryan Walsall, West Mids

I can’t believe all the hype about England when, let’s face it, I doubt Panama could even beat a Sunday League side. I want the lads to win as

much as anyone, but I prefer to be cautious and realistic as they have yet to face an opponent that really challenges them.

So, I will reserve judgement until Thursday when they take on Belgium. If they put in a good performance then, maybe, just maybe I’ll allow myself to dream.

If England do win the World Cup this year, I will celebrate by riding my bike wearing a red England T-shirt and using an England flag as a cap. I think their performance against Panama on Sunday should encourage young people to play football as a way to tackle obesity.

Elliott Arnold Crawley West Sussex

Well done to the England squad on their fantastic victory over Panama.

Well done too to the referee who managed to go through the whole match without getting grit in his eyes at the crucial moments and actually penalising the Panama players for their dirty tricks.

D O’Connor Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex

All this talk of England winning the World Cup is a bit premature. Beating Panama 6-1 doesn’t make them potential world champions, but they are heading the right way.

Steve Owen, Bury

■The BBC are to show a World Cup match on BBC4 and ITV are to show one on ITV4. Why can’t they show all the matches on these channels instead of disrupting their regular schedules and spoiling non footballloving viewers’ enjoyment? I am a football fan, by the way, but I feel so sorry for the millions who are not.
