THE BUGGLES: Video Killed the Radio Star (1979)

-

On August 1, 1981, two years after its release, this became the first video played by MTV.

Until then, the video, which was shot in one day, had only been on Top of the Pops.

MTV made the song, which was co-written by music supremo Trevor Horn, a global hit.

Buggles band member Geoff Downes said: “Making a video was an afterthought. It didn’t seem ground-breaking at the time.”

The video attracted complaints for being “too violent” as it showed an exploding radio.

But the original, which was changed at the last minute, had showed a young girl being blown up on top of a pile of radios.
