1906: The first motor racing Grand Prix, the French Grand Prix, was run at Le Mans – with Romanian Ferenc Szisz driving a Renault to victory at an average speed of 63mph.
1954: The highest-scoring match in the final stages of the World Cup was recorded in the quarter-finals of the competition in Lausanne. Host nation Switzerland were beaten 7-5 by neighbours Austria.
1959: Ingemar Johansson stopped Floyd Patterson in the third round at Yankee Stadium, New York, to become the world heavyweight champion.
2003: Cameroon international MarcVivien Foe died after collapsing during a Confederations Cup match against Colombia in Lyon. Foe was 28.
