The NHS makes me proud to be British. There is no other institution that better embodies our values of fairness and kindness. As a society we give respect and care to everyone, regardless of wealth, race or background.
But what has led me, and many of my colleagues, to speak out is that we have seen these principles being systemically degraded by this Government.
The crisis the NHS faces is not an economic necessity. The underfunding and under-resourcing is down to the ideology of a government that wants to undermine and shrink the public sector.
We must stop the creeping privatisation of our NHS. More and more health service contracts are being taken over by private companies such as Capita and Carillion.
This is not ‘economically efficient’, as we are told by the Tories. Rather, staff are cut, corners are cut, and NHS money is taken from providing care into the pockets of shareholders.
