Bullies make 3rd of victims feel suicidal
SOME 34% of bullied youngsters had “suicidal thoughts” in the past 12 months, a study found.
The figure was up from 24% a year ago, while 50% of victims said they felt depressed – up from 36%.
Around 28% of victims turned to self-harming and 11% attempted suicide.
The survey of 9,000 12 to 20-year-olds found 22% had suffered bullying, 26% had witnessed bullying at least once a week and 35% targeted kept quiet.
Anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label wants young people to report cases when they see them.
Chief executive Liam Hackett said: “We need more of those people who witness bullying to turn from bystanders into upstanders, by safely reporting what they see.”
