While the #MeToo movement has been gathering momentum across the globe, with women speaking out against sexual harassment, it has been a rather more muted story in Japan.
Despite being a country that will openly talk about sex, people will rarely discuss sex crimes. And so when Japanese journalist Shiori Ito, 29, went public with allegations that she was raped by a well-known TV journalist – an allegation he strenuously denies – it sent shockwaves across the nation. Shiori received hate mail and was publicly humiliated as she made the unprecedented decision to speak out about a taboo subject.
This fascinating film follows Shiori over a year from her accusation, as criminal charges against Noriyuki Yamaguchi were never brought and she pursued a civil case instead.
Shiori also visits the institutions she believes failed her, meets women who are too frightened to report assaults, and fights for change in Japan.
