KANTE: WE’LL DO BETTER

- FROM DAVID MCDONNELL in Moscow

N’GOLO KANTE has admitted France must improve if they are to have any chance of winning the World Cup.

France qualified for the last 16 as Group C winners and will now play resurgent Argentina in the first game of the knockout stage in Kazan on Saturday.

While Argentina will go into the game on a high after their epic 2-1 win over Nigeria, which sealed their last 16 place, France lurched through after a dismal 0-0 draw with Denmark.

And Chelsea midfielder Kante (right) acknowledged Didier Deschamps’ side will have to raise their level against Argentina.

“I think we can do better and we will improve in the next game,” said Kante.

“We all knew it was a special game against Denmark because we knew all we needed was a draw.

“We played against a very well-organised Danish team.

“The tempo was slow and that’s why we played this kind of game. But we can do better.”

Supporters inside Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium booed France and Denmark at the final whistle after they played out the first goalless draw of the tournament. But Kante added: “On the pitch, I didn’t feel the booing was for us. It was just for the slow tempo of the game at the end.

“We can understand supporters want to see goals and a spectacle.

“But sometimes both teams are focused on what they need and we can be happy to have finished first in the table.”

Asked to name the favourites to lift the trophy, Kante said it had become one of the most open World Cups in recent memory.

“I think every team can make something happen in this competition,” he said.
