Today’s photograph shows French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau tipping his hat at cheering crowds who greeted him on his arrival at the Palace of Versailles, outside Paris to sign the peace treaty which officially ended the First World War. Nicknamed the Tiger, Clemenceau took a harsh stance against Germany, and was instrument­al in imposing tough reparation­s on the defeated power.
