WAYS TO HELP KEEP HOLIDAY COSTS DOWN

-

Do some research before you book. Compare prices to ensure you really do find the best deal.

Don’t just look for the cheapest – consider what’s included for the best-value holiday. Lots of all-inclusive holidays cover more than just meals and drinks – so you can end up saving a fortune rather than shelling out for lots of extras for the whole family.

Choose a hotel that includes a kids’ club to avoid spending extra on activities once you’re there. There are some great kids’ clubs and it will mean you all get a break this summer.

Consider travelling mid-week when flights can be cheaper. We spotted a fare from Manchester to Dalaman from Wednesday, August 15 to Wednesday, August 22 for £341.98 return, compared to £458.98 when travelling Saturday, August 11 to Saturday, August 18 – saving £117.

Don’t buy the first travel insurance policy you’re offered. Research by comparison website travelsupermarket.com found that a family of four could save more than £60 on cover for a two-week trip to Spain in July.

Once you’ve booked your holiday, don’t leave buying your currency until the last minute. Airports don’t offer the best exchange rates. You’ll do much better on the high street or online. Keep an eye on the exchange rates leading up to your departure, and buy it bit by bit when the rate is good, rather than all in one go. Think about taking a mix of cash and a pre-paid card. But ensure there are no charges on purchases via the card.

Make sure you know the baggage allowance – airlines are tough and will charge hefty amounts if your luggage exceeds them.

When you get to your destination, be clever about where you eat and shop. Smart beach-front places will charge a premium compared to those off the main drag – and you’ll usually find more authentic local dishes and products. Think about making lunch your main meal and choose a set menu. This is cheaper than a la carte dining at night.
