Ask Dr Miriam
Q I worry that I’m not brushing my teeth properly. Got any tips?
A An electric toothbrush is likely to be far more effective than a manual one. Watch your technique: rather than brushing up and down, hold the rotating head against each tooth for a couple of seconds.
Check your toothpaste. Adult toothpaste needs to contain at least 140 parts per million of fluoride to protect against decay. Don’t wash your mouth out after brushing – just spit, and leave the residue of the toothpaste to work on your teeth. Brush your teeth as soon as you wake up to keep plaque to a minimum. Flossing needs to be done every day if it’s to have any effect. Don’t brush your teeth after a boozy evening: the acidity in fizzy alcoholic drinks softens the enamel on your teeth. Rinse with mouthwash (this is the only time mouthwash is useful) and brush in the morning.
