Hughes in a hurry to impress

-

ZHARNEL HUGHES goes into today’s British Championships looking to find the form which saw him clock a sub-10 second 100 metres this month.

He and Reece Prescod line up for a meeting which is also a trial for the European Championships and World Cup teams.

Hughes ran a worldleading 9.91sec in Jamaica – since bettered by American Noah Lyles’ 9.88sec – while Prescod recorded a wind-assisted 9.88 in Oregon in May.

Prescod beat world champion Justin Gatlin in the Diamond League in Shanghai in May, and Hughes has bettered Yohan Blake and Tyson Gay this season.

Without the retired Usain Bolt (below) there is a huge sprinting void but Hughes remains at ease.

He said: “I try not to put any pressure on myself. I’m obviously really grateful I ran sub-10 – it’s an athlete’s dream.

“But I’m not going to get ahead of myself. I’m trying to stay humble, stay hungry and go out there and execute each race when I compete.

“There’s no pressure, I’m just having fun and enjoying the moment.

“Reece is running really well and it’s great to see him put down the times as well. Great competition equals great times and it comes down to who shows up at the trials and who executes a great race.”

The women’s 100m will see Dina Asher-Smith, who this month set a British record with 10.92sec, race against Asha Philip.

Andrew Pozzi will run in the 110m hurdles while Great Britain have the top four athletes in Europe in Josh Kerr, Charlie Grice, Chris O’Hare and Jake Wightman contesting the men’s 1,500m.
