MARK CAVENDISH will be looking to narrow the gap on Eddy Merckx’s record number of stage wins in the Tour de France.

Cavendish, 33, was yesterday named in the Team Dimension Data squad for the race which starts next Saturday.

The Manxman has 30 stage wins, just four behind Merckx’s record of 34.

He won four stages of the 2016 Tour but none last year as he was forced out after a stage four crash.

However, his sights are firmly set on Merckx’s record this time around.

“I’m so excited to be able to ride the Tour de France again,” Cavendish said.

“I’m excited to be part of a strong team and I’ll be looking at getting closer to that record of Eddy.” RELIEVED Hull FC coach Lee Radford described a Jake Connorinspired win as “a big two points”.

Connor marked a three-year contract extension with five goals and a drop-goal as Hull battled back from 18-16 and 24-22 down.

Liam Harris (left) was one of their five try-scorers and Radford said: “The performance wasn’t special but how we brought the match home was really pleasing.”

For Widnes it was a 12th successive Super League defeat. Warrington were hanging on to a 20-14 lead (one try from Tom Lineham, left) until late tries from Daryl Clark and Mike Cooper sealed their 14th win in the last 16 games. Price said: ”We were a bit flat at times and missed opportunities.” Red Devils coach Ian Watson said: ”Our effort was outstanding but execution let us down.” Pts 34 28 26 25 22 18 15 15 14 12 11 6 DANNY McGUIRE returned from a blood clot to breathe life into Hull KR’s campaign.

The ex-Great Britain stand-off had missed eight games but his masterclass gave Rovers a slim hope of pulling out of the bottom four (Ryan Shaw scored, left) while ending the Giants’ run of five wins.

Rovers boss Tim Sheens said: “Danny did some good stuff but had a couple of brain explosions. We created some good things but we’re not getting carried away.”
