Today’s picture shows the landmark ceremony to mark the official handover of Hong Kong to China, ending 156 years of British colonial rule. During the event, attended by Prince Charles, PM Tony Blair and China’s President, Jiang Zemin, the Union flag was lowered and the Chinese state flag and new Hong Kong regional flag hoisted for the first time. After a massive firework display, 4,000 guests sat down to a huge state banquet.
