1990: Jockey Willie Carson became only the third man, after Gordon Richards and Alec Russell, to ride six winners at one meeting.

1991: Duke McKenzie became the first British-based boxer to win world titles at two different weights when he beat Gaby Canizales for the WBO bantamweig­ht crown in Southwark. He had previously held the IBF flyweight title.

1999: Manchester United pulled out of the FA Cup in order to compete in the inaugural FIFA Club World Championsh­ip.
