Wimbledon 2015 was one of the low points of a career that has often scraped the barrel. As well as a showdown with an umpire and a code violation for swearing, he exited the tournament to a cascade of boos, under accusations of not trying when he lost to Richard Gasquet. On some points he just walked to the other side of the court without even trying to return serve. He later admitted to “tanking” at eight tournaments in his career. He was fined $2,625 for the swearing.

The following year he went out in the fourth round again to Andy Murray, was fined $8,690 for swearing, and warned by John McEnroe that he had “to look in the mirror if he wants to become a top player”.

He had a third consecutive Wimbledon misery in 2017 when he withdrew with a hip injury in the first round against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, having done the same a week earlier at Queen’s.
