Dying veteran, 87, is burgled as he sleeps

Angry family brand raiders ‘scum’

BURGLARS swiped a dying army veteran’s life savings while he slept.

Dementia sufferer Cyril Maddox, 87, was with wife Vivian, 81, who has motor neurone disease, when their bungalow was targeted early on Sunday morning.

The raiders climbed in through a utility room window they had left open because of the heatwave.

Cyril, who served with the Royal Pioneers, suffered a bleed on the brain in a fall three weeks ago and is feared to have little time left. Daughter Kerry Crisp, 52, said: “Dad’s got days if not hours left to live. He’s been quite agitated since. I think he might have been awake when it happened. “They took his wallet, his emergency fund, his pension. It’s left him penniless. “Only scum would do that to a dying man – it’s wicked.” Inspector Gareth Keyte said the raid in Bromsgrove, Worcs, was “probably the most heartbreaking burglary I have attended”.
