Outrage over cash for racist murderer after he is beaten up in prison
STEPHEN Lawrence killer David Norris has been given a £10,000 payout after he sued justice chiefs over an attack on him in jail.
The 41-year-old racist thug had claimed not enough was done to protect him from fellow inmates.
But the handout sparked fury. Harry Fletcher, of the Victims Rights Campaign, said: “It is totally unjust that serving prisoners receive compensation when the vast majority of victims of crime receive no such support.”
JUSTICE campaigners last night spoke of their fury at the compensation handed to racist killer David Norris after he was beaten up in jail.
The 41-year-old thug got an estimated £10,000 after he sued the Ministry of Justice claiming they failed to protect him.
And the total bill to the taxpayer could reach around £30,000, including legal aid for Norris, court costs and fees for lawyers.
Victims Rights Campaign director Harry Fletcher said: “It is totally unjust that serving prisoners are getting legal aid and receive compensation when the vast majority of victims of crime receive no such support and have to fund themselves.
“This is yet another insult to the Lawrence family.” The payout understood to have been handed to Norris is £1,000 less that the maximum £11,000 given by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority to the families of those killed in recent terror incidents.
Court officials confirmed a settlement was reached but the MoJ refused to comment on how much public money it has paid the killer.
Norris was found covered in blood in his cell at Belmarsh jail, South East London, while awaiting trial in 2011. He needed hospital treatment for a broken nose and ribs.
He claimed three black inmates, including murderer Leon Fyle, 28, attacked him with a knife and a sock filled with tins.
The bleating thug alleged officials left him vulnerable by moving him to a wing with a “large number” of violent black inmates.
No prisoner was ever charged and the MoJ had argued Norris had to prove it took place and the identity of his assailants.
It said initially it would fight the claim, arguing he provoked the attack and failed to take “care for his own safety”.
Stephen, 18, was stabbed to death as he waited for a bus at Eltham, South East London, with friend Duwayne Brooks in 1993.
Gangster’s son Norris and Gary Dobson were jailed for life in 2012 for the murder.
The Lawrence family were refused legal aid in 1994 to launch a private prosecution against Norris and two other suspects.
The MoJ said: “We do not comment on individual cases.”
