TORIES IN INVICTUS BETRAYAL
‘No plans’ to provide MoD funding
TIGHT-FISTED Tories are refusing to fund wounded veterans in Prince Harry’s Invictus Games.
British team costs were covered by Libor banking scandal fines but that has run out before the 2020 games in the Netherlands.
Veterans Minister Tobias Ellwood said: “The Ministry of Defence has no plans to provide funding for the 2020 Invictus Games.”
The MoD, Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes would “deliver” but there would have to be “improved levels of sponsorship and donations”, Mr Ellwood said. The MoD has appointed an officer to “co-ordinate” efforts. The Duke of Sussex founded the Invictus Games and is hugely proud of it. Libor fines paid for hosting the first event in London in 2014 and team costs at games after that. Labour’s Ruth Smeeth blasted the decision, saying: “It’s a disgrace they seem to think the British team should be funded by veterans’ charities.”
