No shows are no sweat for UK track boss

- BY ALEX SPINK

TRACK and field boss Niels de Vos claims the Athletics World Cup can contribute to the nation’s greatest sporting day.

The new event has been derided due to so many of the sport’s top stars choosing to stay away from the London Stadium next week.

Britain’s team for the two-day clash of the world’s top eight nations is missing Laura Muir, Dina Asher-Smith, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Reece Prescod and all four of the world champion men’s sprint relay team.

But de Vos said: “Sunday week has the makings of a special day. We could be world champions in football and world champions in athletics, all in the space of five hours.

“People talk about who’s not competing but we have 21 of the 29 current British champions, 130 current world or Olympic medalists and 23 current world or Olympic champions.

Britain’s challenge is headed by hurdlers Andy Pozzi and Dai Greene and long jumper Lorraine Ugen.
