Brexiteers will get revenge for May’s small victory

- BY JASON BEATTIE Head of Politics

THIS is how low the bar has become for the Government.

It is deemed a triumph that Theresa May managed to hold a meeting of her Cabinet without anyone stomping off.

There could still be resignations in the days ahead.

A makeshift truce should not be mistaken for an outbreak of peace and harmony.

There may not have been blood on the Chequers’ carpet yesterday, but there will be plenty of chances for knives to be wielded at a later date.

The PM held the awayday to try to forge a consensus on her Brexit plan, forcing Brexiteers to ditch their principles and surrender any dignity they had.

At some point, they will seek revenge for this humiliation. Especially when they discover they have signed up to a proposal which will likely be dismissed by Brussels.

It took weeks of infighting and banging of heads to produce this fudged dud. How will they cope when asked to come up with a realistic deal?
