Nuclear vet’s challenge to Defence Sec

- BY SUSIE BONIFACE

A NAVY veteran ordered into nuclear fallout, who is now dying of cancer, has asked the Defence Secretary if he would do it.

Bob Malcolmson, 80, has backed the Mirror’s campaign for a medal for our nuclear test veterans.

He said: “I’d like to ask Gavin Williamson if he’d go on a warship that spent 16 hours in fallout and whether he’d think it was worth a medal if he did.”

Bob, from Belfast, was 18 when HMS Diana went to Australia in 1956 to witness two atomic blasts.

He left the Navy in 1970 and his health issues started four years later.

Bob, who retired near Alicante in Spain, now has terminal lung cancer.

The MoD said it would “consider every request to recognise” nuclear vets.
