I’D freshen things up by bringing in Marcus Rashford and sit out Raheem Sterling.

My issue with Sterling is when the ball goes in to him JORDAN PICKFORD now feels like an England No.1. Before his heroics against Colombia I’m not sure everyone, maybe even himself, felt that way. It was an area of worry. We have all been waiting to see if he really is an England No.1. There were a couple of moments in the Belgium game (below) – and they were not one-offs – where he parried the ball away into a dangerous area. We have highlighted that happening with Everton on Match of the Day. He is a very good keeper, he is very young and he has a lot to learn. He is quite exuberant. Springy, in body and mentality. He could do with having softer hands in certain situations, rather than everything done so aggressively. But from a mentality point of view he is so strong. I enjoyed seeing his decision-making. Ball at feet, he takes control. We have knocked it around at times and then he has said: ‘No, this is not the time’ and launched it. He is assured and makes decisions he wants. It was great to see him have his big moment. One great save pulling that shot out of the top corner, and the penalty save. That won it for us. it doesn’t always stick, and it comes back a bit too much.

I would like to see the Manchester City man turn on the ball more, force defenders back and scare them.

Defenders get tight to him and he comes back and back and passes to a centre-half or full-back and we are at square one.

We are never getting ourselves up the pitch and that is why we don’t have sustained pressure higher up there.

Sterling didn’t play that badly the other day against Colombia, and I think Gareth Southgate likes him defensively. He likes his workrate. I think it is a good time – and the right game – to start with Rashford now.

It’s all about the confidence he has on the ball, the ability to do both, run in behind and go short for the pass.

Also from Raheem’s point of view it might be good for him to sit back and analyse what the team needs and work out where he can have the impact.

Rashford and Danny Rose would be the only two changes I’d make to the side, with Ashley Young out injured. We just need to work on that front line.
