Today’s photograph shows Boris Becker holding up the Wimbledon trophy after becoming the tournament’s youngest ever men’s singles champion, aged 17, after defeating the No 8 seed, South African Kevin Curren, in four sets. Becker was also the first unseeded player and the first German to win the title. The teenager’s victory was aided by his powerful serve – he hit 21 aces throughout the course of the tournament.
