Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie wears a hard hat to inspect damage to the roof of York Minster’s south transept after it was struck by lightning in the early hours. The resulting fire caused damage worth £2.5million.

The Minster had survived three previous fires: in 1753 caused by burning coals left by workmen, 1829 when an arsonist torched the choir area and in 1850 when the nave roof and vault were destroyed after a burning candle was left unattended.
