1877: The first Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship was held. The only title being contested, the men’s singles, was won by Spencer Gore.
1954: Peter Thomson won the first of his five Open golf titles, and the first of three in successive years.
1982: Sir Ian Botham scored 200 runs in 219 balls for England against India at The Oval.
2003: Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger were awarded honorary OBEs. 2006: Top seed Roger Federer won the Wimbledon men’s singles title, beating second seed Rafael Nadal 6-0 7-6 6-7 6-3 on Centre Court.
2008: Mark Cavendish outsprinted his rivals in Chateauroux to win stage five of the Tour de France.
2017: Wayne Rooney completed an emotional return to Everton from Manchester United.
