SING WHEN I’M WINNING

Southgate: I couldn’t listen to ‘Football’s Coming Home’ for 20 years after missing THAT penalty against Germany

- FROM JOHN CROSS in Moscow

GARETH SOUTHGATE can finally listen to English football’s most famous anthem as the Three Lions stand on the brink of history.

The whole nation is singing Football’s Coming Home as it gets behind his side’s incredible World Cup campaign.

And as Southgate prepared the England squad to face Croatia for a place in the final, he revealed it has taken him two decades to

banish the pain of his Euro 1996 penalty miss against Germany.

He said: “Football’s Coming Home, as a song, I couldn’t listen to it for 20 years frankly.

“It has a slightly different feel for me, but it’s nice to hear people enjoying it again.

“I would just walk out of the room, it is an anthem and has followed the team for a long time, but involved some difficult moments as well.

“I don’t stick it on, it’s not on the playlist, but I can listen to it now.”

England are on the brink of a first World Cup final for 52 years and tonight is the country’s first tournament semifinal since hosting the Euros in 1996 when David Baddiel and Frank Skinner recorded the song.

Southgate added: “That ended in disappointment and it is nice to be able to put a different frame on it now.”
