In 1968 the cast featured in the BBC’s traditiona­l Christmas Night with the Stars.

The 10-minute sketch was set on Christmas Day 1940 and featured the men doing fitness exercises with a telegraph Walker obtains pigeons to sell to butcher Jones in this 1972 classic.

It featured the platoon discussing what they should do about the turkey that was accidental­ly shot on a disastrous pub crawl. so he hides them in the organ loft – until they wreak havoc. “This picture sums up Arthur Lowe’s deadpan brilliance,” says Don. There are rumours of rifts among the cast but Don says: “I never saw any arguments.”

He wore it during a court of inquiry into the platoon wasting ammunition. Don says: This rehearsal shot from 1969 shows them doing rowing practice using chairs and mops.

Don says: “The platoon inherit a boat... but fog descends and Mainwaring needed his ingrowing toenails treated in 1973.

Don says: “My son Peter came with me for the first time. Arthur “Clive was a brilliant actor. He was only 48 when Dad’s Army began and I never photograph­ed him in any role in which he played his own age.” they end up stranded in the Channel.
