GLORY TRAIL IN FAIRS CUP FOR CLARETS

-

FIVE decades have elapsed since rollercoaster club Burnley last dusted off their passports to grace the European stage.

The Clarets finished third in the 1965-66 season to earn a place in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (later known as the UEFA Cup and now Europa League).

They disposed of Stuttgart in the first round and Lausanne in the second, before upsetting Napoli in the third round.

In the quarter-finals, Burnley held Eintracht Frankfurt to a 1-1 draw in Germany only to lose out on a semi-final place when they were beaten 2-1 at Turf Moor.

Had they made it through, they would have joined two other British teams in the last four – Leeds and Kilmarnock – as well as Dinamo Zagreb.

The Burnley team that lost to Eintracht Frankfurt – on April 18, 1967, the last time they played in Europe – was: Harry Thomson, Alex Elder, Fred Smith, Dave Merrington, Les Latcham, Gordon Harris, Brian Miller, Brian O’Neil, Ralph Coates, Arthur Bellamy, Willie Morgan.
