Save Dambusters home from Tories

-

What an insult in the RAF’s centenary year. The base was opened in 1916 and was the HQ of 617 Squadron which launched the bouncing bombs raids in the Ruhr Valley in the Second World War.

I could suggest another way to save taxpayers’ money and that would be to abolish the House of Lords. And what about the hundreds of millions being squandered on Brexit? This airbase should remain as a national museum to our brave men and women who fought for our once great country. Hands off ! Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire

It’s completely depressing that the MoD is selling off Scampton – job losses and cultural loss to the county of Lincolnshire in one fell swoop. The Red Arrows are synonymous with this area.

Apart from the direct effect on jobs, there will also be a knock-on effect for the rest of the locality.

Oh the irony of making the announcement when the 100th year of the RAF is being celebrated. Lesley Rose, Lincolnshire So the MoD is selling off RAF Scampton and Linton-onOuse, but I fear what they actually mean is they are giving them to some Tory party-backing developer or other for a pittance. The way this government works, deals have probably been agreed already. It is the taxpayers who will lose out and will probably have to foot the bill to clear both RAF bases. The area round Linton-on- Ouse is lovely, so I can see a small luxury village-type development where the cheapest houses will be around £750,000. Arthur Wood, Leeds

The planned closure of worldfamous RAF Scampton, where the Red Arrows are based, shows the contempt this government has for the British public.

Yet again there’s another sell-off for profit. Money is king as far as the Tories are concerned and our history and values are shoved to one side in pursuit of it.

They continue to sell public assets with no regard for anything else. Why can’t people see what this lot are all about? Brian Scully, Wigan, Gtr Manchester

What a crazy decision by the MoD and this out-of-control government to close RAF Scampton.

It appears to me the Tories are trying to cut our defences to the bone, which is a very bad idea in today’s world where some unstable leaders have their fingers hovering over the red button. The Government should be hanging its head in shame. Colin Wickham Ashton-under-Lyne, Gtr Manchester

Now the Tories are shutting historic RAF Scampton!

What is wrong with everybody letting the Tories sell off all our assets? Years ago people would have been demonstrating against it. Come on, show the Tories what we can do and kick them out. Michael Maher, Gtr Manchester I can understand the future sale of RAF Scampton, as we were told this was on the cards when we visited, but I hope the Museum for Guy Gibson and 617 Squadron can be saved for posterity. People need to learn about what happened – like many historical war acts, they must not be allowed to be forgotten. So many people in the services sacrificed their lives, as well as civilians on the ground too. Their memories should not be denied, so please save the museum and its history.
