Sir Vince: Ballot on Brexit deal possible
SIR Vince Cable accuses the Brexiteers of “misleading” people over having a say on the deal to leave the EU.
Campaigners claim new laws to give the public a vote would take months, making it impossible before March.
But the Lib Dem leader, speaking today at a campaign rally for a referendum on the deal, will insist legislation could take just weeks.
More than 250,000 people have signed a petition calling for a fresh referendum. And Sir Vince will say: “The Brexit fanatics will tell you it’s too late. They are wrong, if not deliberately misleading.
“If Parliament could pass laws to nationalise banks in the financial crisis in days, we can secure the legislation to allow people their right to a final say within weeks.”
Meanwhile, Chancellor Philip Hammond has issued a new call to Brussels to accept Theresa May’s Brexit blueprint, insisting it offers a “fair and sensible” way forward.
