- BY JOSH LAYTON

BRITISH holidaymakers have told how they survived the devastating floods which have ravaged southern France.

Heavy rain in the Gard, Ardeche and Drome areas washed out campsites and led to 1,600 people being evacuated. Power supplies were also cut.

Vicky Naylon, 45, from Bolton, was visiting a campsite in Ardeche when the storm hit on Thursday. She told the Mirror: “It was the worst storm I’ve seen, ever. It rained for 10 hours.”

Kathryn Alford, 44, of Welwyn Garden City, Herts, described her “frightening” ordeal driving on a flooded road as water crashed down a gorge.

And shaken camper Rachel Buchanan, from Oxford, “woke up in a foot of water” at her washed out site.

Nearly 3in of rain fell in 24 hours and kayakers mounted a rescue operation at sites.
