Swearing around your kids acceptable to half of adults

- BY RICHARD JENKINS

MORE than half of parents believe it is acceptable to swear in front of children.

Over one in five with small kids say they are “too young to understand” what is being said, a survey found.

A third would continue to use expletives even if their children knew what they meant, provided they knew not to repeat them.

Four in 10 have heard their own child swear – with “sh**” the most common word. Nearly two thirds have sworn in front of their kids or someone else’s, and one in five has had to apologise to another parent for doing so. Siobhan Freegard of Channel Mum. com, which polled 2,000 parents of children aged up to 16, said: “It’s not long before children are picking up bits of language from their parents. By the age of two they are very adept at parroting words back they have heard mum or dad use.”
