GREAT ESCAPE TWO WOULD BE JOR-DROPPER AT TERRIERS

- BY MIKE WHALLEY

MATHIAS JORGENSEN is ready to put his World Cup agony behind him, by recreating Huddersfield’s great escape. Jorgensen made history in Russia as the first Terriers player to score at a World Cup finals, with a goal for Denmark against Croatia in the last-16. Denmark went out on penalties, perhaps the only blip in the centre-back’s incredible year. He helped Town survive against the odds in the Premier League in May with back-toback draws against Manchester City and Chelsea – their first two opponents of the new season. David Wagner’s men were out partying until 5am in their club tracksuits after securing survival at Stamford Bridge And Jorgensen, 28, hopes for more happy memories when Chelsea visit today. “The night after Chelsea was definitely one of my fondest memories of 2018,” he said. “We all wanted to be together. We’d been in the trenches together all year.

“It was kind of symbolic that we were in London. We were Huddersfield Town in our club gear and just wanted to go out and enjoy the things we had accomplished.

“A few of the Danish lads did mention it at the World Cup. Kasper Schmeichel asked, ‘Why would you ever want to go out in your tracksuit?’ They found it funny. But we were all in it together.

“As a year, 2018 has been good for me. Maybe it would be a bit greedy to ask for more.

“OK, maybe a place in the World Cup quarterfinals would have made me happier. But, overall, it has been a good year.”

Huddersfield spent about £40million this summer, paying a club record £16m to make defender Terence Kongolo’s loan from Monaco permanent.

Wagner believesthey can again defy the odds: “If money is the only thing that decides things, then we will be in the bottom three – but we weren’t in the bottom three last season. Success will be a third successive season in the Premier League.”
