I’LL MISS YOU

Emotional Murray fears that he’ll never play Davis Cup tennis again in his beloved Scotland

ANDY MURRAY has revealed his torment at missing next week’s Davis Cup tie in Glasgow amid fears he may never play competitively in Scotland again.

The three-time Grand Slam champion and double Olympic gold medallist took to social media to send a heartfelt message to fans explaining the tough call to miss the World Cup play-off against Uzbekistan at the Emirates Arena.

Murray admitted being so desperate to play he considered just appearing for the Saturday doubles tie, but was advised by medics to continue his rehabilitation following hip surgery in January.

The 31-year-old Scot is continuing to strive for full fitness after making his Grand Slam return following a 14-month absence at the US Open, where he lost in the second round.

Murray said that playing

alongside his brother Jamie

– who is included in Leon Smith’s GB team – in Glasgow for previous ties were some of the highlights of his career.

Writing on Instagram, he said: “With this possibly being my last chance to compete in Scotland as a professional I really wanted to be there with the team and found this decision emotionally quite challenging.

“I spoke to our captain, Leon, about possibly coming to just play doubles, but have been recommended to take a couple of weeks off hitting to continue my reconditioning.

“I didn’t want to just show up not ready to perform to a high enough standard and ultimately let my teammates/country down.

“If I don’t get the chance to compete in Scotland again, I just want to say thank you so much to all the fans who have come along to support the team over the years.

“You have created some incredible atmospheres for me and the team to play in and I will always remember that. Having been born in Glasgow and growing up in Scotland I would never have imagined I would see such passionate fans packing out stadiums for tennis matches.

“Playing with my Big Bro in those stadiums has been very, very special.

“Thank you so much again... I’ll miss you.”
