Van Dijk says Klopp’s side want a clean sweep of trophies

- BY DAVID MADDOCK @MaddockMirror

VIRGIL VAN DIJK believes something special is happening at Liverpool... and he wants to prove it by winning FOUR trophies this season.

The £75million defender has been one of the key figures in Liverpool’s faultless start to the season and, after Tuesday’s dramatic last-gasp victory over Paris Saint-Germain, he insists he is ready to “write history” with the Mersey men.

“I want to create memories here and write history with all these boys,” said the Dutchman (below) after the 3-2 defeat of the French champions at Anfield.

“Everyone is excited, everyone is feeling good, everyone wants to be part of this. We know the season is very long. We have four competitions to play in and we want to win everything – that is basically our mindset.

“Given the size of this club and the history of this club, we want to try to win everything. It’s going to be very difficult to do but we are going to try.”

Van Dijk said he will never get used to the drama and adrenalin rush that a famous European night at Anfield brings. Liverpool could have suffered a Champions League hangover following their defeat by Real Madrid in last season’s final in Kiev but have instead started the season with six straight wins, and Van Dijk said that must be merely the start of something big. “You need to have belief, you need to have belief in everyone in your team, and I have that belief in this team,” he said. “There are players who are not even in the squad who have so much potential, so much quality, and that says a lot about our team.

“It’s exciting and, no, I’m never gonna get used to this.

“We want to compete for every competition like we did last year, and we really wanted to start well this time.”

Liverpool have beaten Spurs and PSG in the last five days and in the next three weeks play Chelsea twice, Napoli and Manchester City.

“You want to play these games,” said Van Dijk. “You want to play these clubs we are going to face. You want to play at the highest level.”
