Statin add-on to aid heart and diabetes
A NEW class of drugs taken alongside statins could help tackle heart disease and diabetes.
Statins work by lowering bad cholesterol but some patients still get heart attacks due to raised levels of fats called triglycerides.
The new drugs, called lipoprotein lipase enhancers, boost enzymes that break down those fats.
Cambridge University researchers also found the enzymes may improve blood sugar control.
Dr Luca Lotta said: “Our study suggests these new agents could give additional benefits to patients with heart disease when added to statins.
“This could prevent more heart attacks as well as reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.”
