Tories just lead us on a merry dance

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ IN her speech, Theresa May claimed the end of austerity is in sight. Unfortunately, she forgot to mention how long it will take to clear up the misery of austerity, our failing economy, the destruction of the NHS and the chaos created by the possibility of a no-deal Brexit, leaving our manufacturing industry to cancel orders and stop production. All this created by the Tory Government past and present.

Is she scared? You bet. Pie crust promises and Pinocchio porkies might win over the party faithful, but the public has seen this dance before – when she did the Harlem shuffle with her series of failed Cabinets.

Mrs May is fully aware her Government has lost its sense of purpose and the trust of the electorate. Jeremy Corbyn is her nemesis who will soon be knocking on the door of No10, calling on her to come out and admit defeat.

■ I hope ABBA weren’t tuned into the Tory conference in Birmingham. What an embarrassment! But what good news from our new queen of pop – apparently all is well with the country and we can get on with our lives. There will be no more tightening our belts because austerity is a thing of the past... or maybe we dreamt it all. But who is kidding who? We are heading for a major disaster and all like-minded politicians, regardless of party, should get together and put a stop to Brexit before it’s too late.

James Rooney, Elgin, Moray ■ Well, how inspiring was the Tory Conference last week? Not at all. No fresh ideas, no hope for the future and no sign of an apology to the long-suffering victims of austerity.

Theresa May’s keynote speech consisted only of the usual rhetoric used before an approaching election – the promises made will only be valid if the Tory paymasters say so.

I only hope her May dance was a dress rehearsal for when she waltzes out of Downing Street for the last time!

■ By far and away the best way of attracting young voters to the Conservative Party is for its leader to treat the nation to a spot of “mum dancing”. Perhaps her speech should have ended with “Nanna’s going now!” I wonder if my toes will ever fully uncurl! Michael

Lancs ■ Theresa May looked like a puppet dancing on to the stage at the Tory conference. But is Boris pulling her strings? Her speech was, as expected dull, boring, promising everything, in the knowledge that she will never deliver on any of it.

At least the Labour Conference was full of vigour and promises that they will achieve when they are elected. Let us hope that the voters will see through May’s promises when the election comes around.

■ What an idiot Theresa May looked dancing on to the stage at the Tory conference. She couldn’t even get the timing right for that. The Tories have lied every time an election was in sight but when they get into power it all comes to nothing. The next election will be a great chance to get rid of them for good. Let’s do it.
