It’s election Tay
Ooh, look what a US Republican candidate made Taylor Swift do.
After drawing criticism for keeping politically schtum, the pop star has thrown her support behind Tennessee’s Democrat candidate in the upcoming midterms, because the Republican’s voting record “appals and terrifies” her.
Some cutting rhyming couplets are no doubt coming their way.
It’s a rare move for the imageconscious pop star, 28, who refused to divulge her vote intentions ahead of the 2016 election, despite campaigns calling for her to denounce US President Donald Trump.
“In the past, I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,” she wrote to her 112 million Instagram followers.
She added that she wanted to vote for someone who fought for citizens “no matter their skin colour, gender or who they love”.
Taylor was hailed last year as an “Aryan goddess” by white supremacists. She threatened legal action against a blogger who, she claimed, portrayed her as a “figurehead” for such groups.
In 2012, she stated: “I don’t talk about politics because it might influence other people.” But this year, she called for gun law reform.
Taylor’s former feud buddy Katy Perry (who campaigned for Democrat Hillary Clinton) liked the post. But “Make America Great Again” hat fan Kanye West, who has an ongoing feud with Taylor, is yet to comment.
The chances of her backing his 2020 presidential bid are now even smaller.
‘‘ I have been reluctant to voice opinions . . . but I feel different now
