Wreaths for ‘all the friends we have lost’
FIREFIGHTERS killed in the line of duty will be honoured today in a “once-in-ageneration” commemoration.
Every fire service in the UK will be represented at a wreath-laying at St Paul’s Cathedral in Central London, followed by a procession.
The event marks the FBU centenary and the Mirror has joined forces with the union so the public can follow the event via a live stream at www. mirror.co.uk/fbu.
Matt Wrack, head of the FBU, said:
“This is a once-in-ageneration event, to celebrate the fire and rescue service, our union and commemorate friends we have lost.”
He said improvements had been won through 100 years of campaigns, adding: “Our proud past can guide us in strengthening for the future.”
The wreath-laying is at noon, the procession begins at 1.15pm and a service at Southwark Cathedral starts at 2pm. It features readings of firsthand accounts from incidents including the Blitz in 1940 and Grenfell Tower.
