OAKS NO JOKE FOR O’BRIEN

- BY DAVID YATES

IRIDESSA gave Joseph O’Brien a new career milestone at Newmarket — and is now favourite for the 2019 Oaks.

The daughter of 2013 Derby winner Ruler Of The World proved too strong for 5-2 favourite Hermosa — trained by O’Brien’s father Aidan — in the Group 1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile to earn a 16-1 quote with Betfair for next year’s Epsom Classic.

Iridessa is also 16-1 for the 1,000 Guineas back at Newmarket next May, but O’Brien jnr, landing his first Group 1 prize in Britain, said: “Being by Ruler Of The World, she’s probably more of an Oaks filly.

“She travelled well and I thought she quickened up nicely,” added the trainer, winner of a Melbourne Cup, Irish Derby and an Irish Gold

Cup since taking out a licence in 2016.

“Today was a fairly run race and she’s shown how good she is.”
