Church chief stands down

POPE Francis has accepted the resignation of Washington DC’s cardinal who was slammed over his handling of a string of sex abuse cases.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, 77, has became one of the highest-ranking Catholic leaders to step aside over global accusations that the church had harboured sex abusers for decades.
